Taiwan President Stands Up To China, Says Country Won’t ‘Bow To Pressure’

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-we said Sunday during the country's National Day celebrations that she would not “bow to pressure” from China.“We will do our utmost to prevent the status quo from being unilaterally altered,” Ing-wen said. The Taiwanese leader also pledged to continue bolstering the island’s military defenses as well as resisting “the path China has laid out for us.” Her comments came a day after China’s President Xi Jinping called on Taiwan to "join hands" with his nation for a “peaceful reunification.” Tsai argued that life under Chinese Communist Party rule wouldn't offer "neither a free and democratic way of life for Taiwan, nor sovereignty for our 23 million people." China has tried to claim Taiwan as part of its national territory; the island nation has been independent of mainland rule since the Chinese Civil War concluded in 1949.
