Police arrested a man with a weapon near Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh's Maryland home early Wednesday morning, according to a spokesperson for the court.

Why it matters: The man was carrying at least one weapon and burglary tools and told police he wanted to kill Kavanaugh, according to the Washington Post, citing anonymous sources familiar with the investigation.

The sources told the Post that the man, described as in his mid-20s and from California, did not make it onto Kavanaugh's property but was stopped by police on a street near the house.

Police were notified that the person may be a threat to the justice but they did not know who provided the tip, according to the Post.

The man had a handgun, a knife and pepper spray, NBC News reports, also citing anonymous sources familiar with the investigation.

What they're saying: "At approximately 1:50 a.m. today, a man was arrested near Justice Kavanaugh's residence," Supreme Court spokesperson Patricia McCabe said.
