Clarence Thomas impeachment unlikely despite push from far-left lawmakers

Top Democrats are tamping down calls from liberal lawmakers to impeach Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas for not recusing himself from cases related to the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

That despite text messages showing his wife pushing then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows to fight to overturn the presidential election results.

Democrats have voiced strong concerns that Ginni Thomas’s correspondences with conservative lawmakers' offices and Meadows ahead of the riot pose a conflict of interest, with a growing number arguing Clarence Thomas should step aside in cases pertaining to the 2020 election.

While concerns remain, senior Democrats including Speaker Nancy Pelosi have indicated that impeachment is an unlikely course of action. The California Democrat told members that it’s “up to an individual justice to decide to recuse himself if his wife is participating in a coup” during a House Democratic Caucus meeting on Tuesday morning.
