• Two runoff elections in Georgia will likely decide which party controls a majority in the U.S. Senate, after neither race saw a candidate receive over 50% of the vote.
• Incumbent Republican Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler will face off against Democrats Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock, respectively.
• Loeffler was appointed to her seat in December 2019 by Gov. Brian Kemp, the Republican who narrowly defeated Democrat Stacy Abrams in 2018. Abrams has since built a large voter registration apparatus in Georgia and around the country, which some Democrats credit for boosting Democratic turnout in the historically red state.
• Democrats and Republicans have each secured 48 Senate seats. The other two senate races in Alaska and North Carolina are expected to be called for Republicans. In the event of a 50-50 tie in the Senate, Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris would break the tie.
