South Carolina Set to Lower Confederate Flag as Era Ends

Preparing to close a chapter on a symbol of the Deep South and its history of resistance and racial animus, South Carolina officials gathered near the Confederate battle flag as it waved outside the State House for the last time Friday, just minutes before it was scheduled to be lowered from where it has flown for more than 50 years.
