A term that can imply virtue (per the  liberal perspective it means acceptance of people and perspectives that are different, e.g. the Southern Poverty Law Center years ago developed a curriculum called Teaching Tolerance); or moral weakness (either side seeing it as toleratingthe intolerable, “live and let live”, though it may be more often a conservative critique.  

Many conservatives complain the term is used unfairly, because true tolerance would be welcoming to all perspectives, even the conservative one; meanwhile, some progressives have begun to take exception at the term as well, indicating that stopping at tolerance is not achieving enough - instead, we must work for embrace and affirmation of people and perspectives that are different than ours.
