Trump Says Man Shoved by Buffalo Police "Could Be" Connected to Antifa

Summary from the AllSides News Team

President Donald Trump advanced an unfounded theory Tuesday about the man who was hospitalized after being pushed to the ground by Buffalo police at a protest last week, tweeting that he "could be an ANTIFA provocateur". The man, 75-year-old Martin Gugino, is reportedly a longtime activist, and was discharged from the hospital Tuesday. Reports from throughout the political spectrum focused on the backlash to Trump's tweet, and the relative silence from Republican lawmakers who had been questioned on the matter. Some coverage from left-rated outlets focused on testimony from Gugino's friends that he is gentle and passive; some right-rated outlets reported that Gugino was arrested in 2012 at a White House protest and recently deleted his social media accounts.

“That’s a disgrace,” Sen. Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, said Tuesday. “They can’t even speak out on that?”

Several Republicans criticized the tweet, among them Lisa Murkowski, of...

On Tuesday, Trump accused the elderly protester who was violently shoved to the ground by Buffalo police last Thursday of staging the incident as an operation for Antifa. The incredible accusation—entirely baseless—defies the reality captured in a widely seen video that has since led to the firing of the two officers who pushed 75-year-old Martin Gugino, causing him to bleed from the head, during a protest against police brutality outside Buffalo’s...

President Trump on Tuesday shared an unfounded conspiracy theory that an incident in which an elderly man was pushed to the ground by police in Buffalo, N.Y., during a protest over the police killing of George Floyd could be a "set up."

The president cited right-wing One America News Network (OANN) in making the incendiary claim, which comes amid a national debate over police brutality.
