Nation Prepares for Possible Unrest Ahead of Biden Inauguration

Ahead of President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration on Wednesday, the National Guard has deployed 25,000 members to Washington, D.C. in anticipation of unrest. Approximately 7,000 National Guard troops are already stationed in the nation's capitol, with more to arrive from various states before Wednesday at the request of the Secret Service, according to the chief of the National Guard Bureau. Military leaders called Thursday and Friday for state leaders across the country to send extra troops; some responded to the call, while others declined, securing their own cities in anticipation of unrest after the Capitol building was breached on Jan. 6. States including Wisconsin and Oregon stationed security in their cities. The Associated Press reported Thursday that the FBI were tracking "online chatter" regarding armed protests in the upcoming week. Media outlets across the political spectrum covered the news. Some coverage reported that despite the extra security, few protesters showed up at the U.S. Capitol over the weekend.
