Summary from the AllSides News Team
The shooting at a Minneapolis Catholic school on Wednesday is sparking a national debate surrounding the alleged transgender identity of the suspect.
Trans Lunatic Playing Out Demonic Fantasies: βDemons have taken hold of Minneapolis,β according to American Spectator (Right bias) opinion writer Scott McKay, who said the βatrocityβ in Minneapolis is βhardly surprisingβ considering Gov. Tim Walz declared the state a "sanctuary" for trans kids, or, McKay posited, βa sanctuary for deranged parents intent on sterilizing their childrenβ and βmutilating them with sex-change surgeries.β McKay continued, βIt doesnβt require a devotee of transgender ideology to make a mass shooter,β explaining that they come from βseveral different strains of psychopathy.β
Sick Victory Lap Over βTransβ Shooter: According to the Daily Beast (Left), βa series of MAGA names linked the murder to gender politicsβ in what it is calling βa sick victory lap.β The article called out Matt Walsh (Right), who said the trans βagenda is losingβ and βnow is precisely the moment when trans militants are the MOST dangerous.β Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who said the shooter βwas likely groomed and transitioned as a teenager,β was also criticized. LGBTQ Nation (Left) highlighted many βright wingersβ who are βblaming trans identity for the tragedy,β while also saying trans people "will likely fear a backlashβ over these allegations.
A Look At The Data: Newsweek (Center) cited a βnational debateβ around the shooter's identity, noting that the shooting βprompted some conservatives to allege a βpatternβ when it comes to transgender individuals and violence.β The data, according to Newsweek, shows βmass shootings by transgender individuals are rare and the vast majority of perpetrators are cisgender men.β It included commentary from the director of a gun violence research lab who said there is βno way for us to quantifyβ shootings by transgender individuals because βthis is not information that is collected in crime statistics.β There are multiple βschool shooting trackersβ that have very different methodologies for counting the number of shootings, fueling misinformation on the issue.
