'Rededicate 250' Prayer Event Divides Biased News Media

The National Mall in Washington, DC, held the "Rededicate 250" prayer rally on Sunday, where thousands joined in prayer – and some politics. 

For Context: The event, "Rededicate 250: A National Jubilee of Prayer, Praise & Thanksgiving," focused on the revitalization of Christianity in the US and drew many conservative political figures like House Speaker Mike Johnson, who led a prayer. Freedom 250, a nonprofit within the National Park Foundation, organized the event with support from the White House. Some groups, including Freedom from Religion Foundation, organized alternative events in protest.

Contradictory Coverage: News outlets on the left generally framed their coverage negatively and stressed concerns for church-state separation, while outlets on the right more often touted the event's prayerfulness and patriotism. Many outlets' biased framing directly contradicted that of another political or ideological affiliation.

• Data Slants: Both NPR (Lean Left bias) and Daily Wire (Right) cited a Pew Research Center poll on religion published on Thursday. NPR, however, focused on the historically continuous support for church-state separation, concluding, "If Trump's religious revival is meant to encourage a fusion of Christianity and government, [the data] shows Americans are not buying it." Daily Wire contrastingly highlighted the finding that "37% of US adults believe religion is gaining influence in America, the highest share since 2002." It also cited a recent Gallup poll that points to a religious resurgence among young men.
• Speaker Inclusivity: Daily Wire succinctly reported that the event "featured a host of political, Catholic, and evangelical leaders," and Daily Mail (Lean Right) further asserted, "Not all speakers were Evangelical or even Christian. One rabbi addressed the crowd, as the growing seeds of antisemitism have been sown by a number of prominent political commentators on the American Right." On the other hand, NPR labeled the rabbi as "the only non-Christian religious leader who spoke" and emphasized, "Of the 19 faith leaders that were scheduled to speak, 18 are Christian, and most are evangelical."
• Constitutional Concerns: Outlets on the right largely omitted criticisms surrounding the First Amendment, meanwhile some on the left, such as CNN (Lean Left), emphasized that narrative. The outlet called the event "the latest flashpoint in the Trump administration blurring separation of church and state" and used the inflammatory term "Christian nationalism." It cited the First Amendment's "Establishment Clause" that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" but omitted the amendment's subsequent assertion that Congress shall also make no law prohibiting free religious expression.
