Perspectives: Liberty University President Resigns Amid Alleged Sex Scandal

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. announced his resignation Tuesday. Falwell has garnered criticism for his role in an alleged sex scandal first reported this week by Reuters; he is a prominent figure in American religious conservatism, and took over as head of Liberty, an evangelical school, in 2007. The story has been covered by outlets on all sides of the spectrum, with more coverage coming from left- and center-rated outlets. Voices throughout the spectrum have been critical of Falwell's alleged sexual conduct and overall behavior as Liberty president. Some right-rated voices were especially critical of the alleged polygamy Falwell and his wife participated in, contrasting it with Falwell's self-expressed Christianity. At least one left-rated voice also focused on the purported non-monogamy, criticizing the ostensible social normality of monogamous relationships.

Jerry Falwell Jr.'s career, both at Liberty University and as a figurehead of the evangelical community, is over.

After years of mounting stunts and scandals, Falwell's personal life exploded into the national limelight. At first, he tried to get ahead of the story, with the Washington Examiner's Paul Bedard breaking his eleventh-hour statement claiming that his wife Becki had engaged in "an inappropriate personal relationship with" a pool assistant they had met nearly a decade ago, "something in which I was not involved." Then, however, came the real allegation —...

Under fire for an alleged sex scandal, the embattled Jerry Falwell Jr. has submitted his resignation as head of Liberty University, school officials said Tuesday – less than 24 hours after Falwell denied he was leaving the evangelical institution.

Liberty's board of trustees accepted his resignation Tuesday, effective immediately, the university said in a statement, after receiving a resignation letter from Falwell late Monday night.

His resignation marks an ignominious end to his 13-year run as Liberty president that began when his televangelist father who founded the university, The Rev....
