Biden Admin Accused of Covering Up Potential Cancer Clusters After East Palestine Derailment

Summary from the AllSides News Team

A whistleblower accused the Biden administration of concealing information regarding potential cancer clusters in East Palestine, Ohio, following a toxic chemical spill resulting from a train derailment in 2023.

The Details: The Government Accountability Project report suggests that the administration, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), failed to publish health data indicating "inevitable health impacts" from the incident. According to the report, the administration knew residents would require health check-ups for at least 20 years following the spill and faced the potential for cancer clusters but did not disclose this to the public. “It was only discussed internally, and it actually was discussed all the way up to the White House,”  Government Accountability Project investigator Lesley Pacey said. NewsNation (Center bias) obtained an email instructing FEMA executive Jim McPherson not to interact with the residents when he visited East Palestine in September 2023.

For Context: The toxins released included vinyl chloride and dozens of other chemicals, many of which are carcinogens, contaminating air, soil, and water sources in the area. Exposure to vinyl chloride is linked to "a heightened risk of a rare form of liver cancer (hepatic angiosarcoma), as well as primary liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma), brain and lung cancers, lymphoma and leukemia," according to the Daily Mail (Right). In October 2023, the Environmental Protection Agency said, "Residents of East Palestine are not in danger from contaminated drinking water, soil, or air from the derailment.” Pacey said, “They didn’t always test for the right chemicals; they didn’t test in the right locations; they didn’t have the right detection limits.”

The Biden administration admitted possible cancer-causing toxins were spread in East Palestine, Ohio, following the Norfolk Southern train derailment in 2023, explosive new emails show, despite the White House insisting residents were safe.

“The occurrence of a cancer-cluster in EP [East Palestine] is not zero,” FEMA recovery leader James McPherson wrote in a March 29, 2024, email to other public health officials — a little more than a year after the crash.

“As you all are aware, the first 48 hours of the fire created a really toxic plume,” he said...

Watchdog: Biden Admin Hid Cancer Cluster Report in East Palestine

Lesley Pacey, an investigator with the Government Accountability Project, on Sunday said that while the people of East Palestine, Ohio, were dealing with the aftermath of the train derailment, which launched a cloud of toxic vinyl chloride into the air and water causing dead fish to float up from the river, the Biden administration was discussing internally whether to release to the public a report detailing the event may have caused "cancer clusters."

Pacey told NewsNation that an unmet needs report taken by a FEMA official showed that the agency "knew health...

FEMA, White House covered up East Palestine devastation: Exclusive

After officials burned five tankers containing 115,000 gallons of toxic vinyl chloride over East Palestine, residents were sick and crying out for help.

In September 2023, seven months later, President Biden issued an executive order, sending FEMA executive Jim McPherson to East Palestine to assess the community’s unmet needs.

But new documents from FEMA obtained through the Freedom of Information Act show extensive coordination between FEMA, the White House, the National Security Council, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Justice, voicing serious concerns about health, toxins and the unmet needs of East Palestine...
