What is Mamdani's 'Office of Mass Engagement'?
Summary from the AllSides News Team
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani created a new "Office of Mass Engagement" via executive order on Friday.
The Details: Tascha Van Auken, Mamdani's former campaign field director and appointed head of the new department, said the department "will demystify government so all New Yorkers can be active participants and have the resources they need to thrive." Some of the office's responsibilities will include leading engagement campaigns to "organize New Yorkers to participate in city decision-making," "proactively reach communities that have historically been excluded from policymaking," and oversee the Public Engagement unit, which already exists.
For Context: Van Auken has worked on campaigns for Mamdani, Sen. Julia Salazar (D-NY), and New York State Assembly Member Phara Souffrant Forrest (D). She is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America organization and has also worked as a deputy campaign director for the Working Families Party.
How the Media Covered It: Though not widely covered on either side of the political spectrum, outlets on the right tended to focus on Van Auken's affiliation with the Democratic Socialist party, while New York Times (Lean Left bias) used its headline to highlight Mamdani's emphasis on "Public Participation in Government." New York Times included criticism from Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY), who voiced fear that this office allows Mamdani to "use taxpayer funds" to further the agendas of groups like the Democratic Socialists of America. It also included counterpoints from government watchdog group Common Cause New York. National Review (Lean Right) highlighted Van Auken's political leanings by calling her a "Veteran Socialist Organizer" in its headline but did not note any of Lawler's specific criticisms. Fox News (Right) included many of Mamdani's remarks and explanations of the office in its coverage.

New York's newly sworn-in mayor Zohran Mamdani signed an executive order Friday to create an Office of Mass Engagement led by his campaign's field director and veteran socialist organizer Tascha Van Auken.
The new office will help rebuild "our social infrastructure at scale," Mamdani said at his first press conference at Brooklyn's Grand Army Plaza, and will maintain the social and civic momentum he generated in this year's election.
"For too long, city government has only listened to the wealthy and well-connected while working New Yorkers remain further and further...
Behind Mayor Zohran Mamdani's stunning electoral victory was a grass roots volunteer operation that saw 100,000 volunteers knock on three million doors and make 4.5 million calls to engage voters. Mr. Mamdani announced on Friday that he wants to bring that level of public participation to City Hall.
Sitting in Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn, he signed an executive order creating an Office of Mass Engagement to help New Yorkers participate in government decisions and to reach communities that have been marginalized from the process.
