Trump Reports 'Similar Wavelength' with Gov. Walz After Meeting, Walz Says Trump Refuses to End 'Assault' on Minnesota

President Donald Trump and Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) spoke over the phone on Monday regarding the political unrest in Minnesota amid ongoing immigration enforcement protests and violence. The two leaders reported vastly different outlooks on the issue after their meeting.

Key Quotes: "It was a very good call, and we, actually, seemed to be on a similar wavelength," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "... He was happy that Tom Homan was going to Minnesota, and so am I! We have had such tremendous SUCCESS in Washington, DC; Memphis, Tennessee; and New Orleans, Louisiana, and virtually every other place that we have 'touched' and, even in Minnesota, crime is way down, but both Governor Walz and I want to make it better!" 

About an hour later, The Wall Street Journal (Center bias) published an opinion piece by Walz, who stated, "The Trump administration's assault on Minnesota long ago stopped being a matter of immigration enforcement. It is a campaign of organized brutality against the people of our state. It isn't just. It isn't legal. And, critically, it isn't making anyone any safer… Everyone wants to see our immigration laws enforced. That isn't what is happening in Minnesota… I have repeatedly appealed to President Trump to lower the temperature. But he refuses. I fear that his hope is for the tension between ICE agents and the communities they're ransacking to boil over—that he wants you to see more chaos on your TV screens, protests turn into riots, more people get hurt."

For Context: Protests in Minnesota began after Trump deployed 2,000 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to Minneapolis in early January. On January 7, an ICE agent shot and killed 37-year-old protestor Renee Good during a controversial altercation. Most recently, a Border Patrol agent shot and killed 37-year-old protestor Alex Pretti on Saturday, sparking further controversy and confusion. 

How The Media Covered It: Initial media coverage across the political spectrum highlighted what NBC News (Lean Left) called a "noticeable shift in the way [Trump's] referred to Walz." However, many outlets published their articles prior to when The Wall Street Journal published Walz's critical commentary.
