Trump Pardons Democrat Henry Cuellar in Bribery, Conspiracy Case

President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday morning a "full and unconditional pardon" for Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), who had been indicted on charges of bribery and conspiracy.

The Details: The Department of Justice indicted Cuellar and his wife, Imelda Cuellar, in May 2024 for allegedly taking $600,000 in bribes from a Mexican bank and an Azerbaijan-owned energy company. 

For Context: Cuellar was openly critical of the Biden administration, particularly for its "record number of migrants crossing the border," according to Straight Arrow News (Center bias). In his Truth Social post about the pardon, Trump wrote that Cuellar "bravely spoke out against Open Borders, and the Biden Border 'Catastrophe.'" He also wrote that "the Biden Administration weaponized the Justice System against their Political Opponents, and anyone who disagreed with them," citing Cuellar as an example of this.

Cuellar's Response: Cuellar said, "I want to thank President Trump for this. … Now we clear the air. Nothing has changed, and we're going to be ready to win re-election again." He clarified that he will not be switching parties, calling himself a "good old conservative Democrat." 

How the Media Covered It: Straight Arrow News noted that Cuellar "has a history of breaking with his party" and "was one of the last Democrats in Congress who opposed abortion rights." Fox News (Right) focused on the details of Trump's pardon as well as Cuellar's response to Trump. It also highlighted some of Cuellar's statements in regard to the Biden administration's border policies, noting that, "In January 2024, Cuellar warned fellow Democrats, including President Biden, to prepare for border security to be a top election issue in the 2024 cycle." Politico (Lean Left) reported on Cuellar's intentions to seek reelection, and reported that Cuellar's clemency "comes as the president faces backlash for his use of the pardon power."
