Summary from the AllSides News Team
California Governor Gavin Newsom and President Donald Trump are in dispute over the president's order to deploy the National Guard to Los Angeles to deal with unrest following Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids on Friday.
The Details: Trump deployed 2,000 California National Guard soldiers early on Sunday after ICE agents were reportedly attacked while conducting deportation raids. Newsom has demanded that Trump rescind the decision and has accused him of acting like a “dictator.” He also told MSNBC (Left bias) in an interview on Sunday that California was planning to sue the administration on Monday. On Monday afternoon, 700 US Marines were also deployed to LA.
Trump’s Order: Trump issued an order on Saturday that read, “In light of these incidents and credible threats of continued violence… I direct and delegate actions as necessary for the Secretary of Defense to coordinate with the Governors of the States and the National Guard Bureau in identifying and ordering into Federal service the appropriate members and units of the National Guard under this authority.”
Newsom’s Response: Newsom told MSNBC, “Donald Trump has created the conditions you see on your TV tonight… ever since he announced he was taking over the National Guard — an illegal act, an immoral act, an unconstitutional act.” Of Trump’s order, he said, “It specifically notes… they had to coordinate with the governor of the state. They never coordinated with the governor of the state. We have no problem working collaboratively in a mutual aid system with local law enforcement. But there’s a protocol, there’s a process. He didn’t care about that. And the worst part, he completely lied.”
How The Media Covered It: Semafor (Lean Left) prominently noted this is “the first time that federal troops have been deployed on domestic soil against the wishes of state authorities since the 1960s.” The Hill (Center) described the move as one “with little precedent in U.S. history.” Fox News (Right) framed the dispute through Newsom and Trump’s “different interpretations” of the 1878 Posse Comitatus Act.

It marks the first time that federal troops have been deployed on domestic soil against the wishes of state authorities since the 1960s. Police officers clashed with crowds Sunday, the third day of protests sparked by border authorities’ raids on suspected undocumented migrants.
President Donald Trump and California Gov. Gavin Newsom are clashing over the deployment of the National Guard amid ongoing Los Angeles riots with different interpretations of the 1878 law that governs the use of the military to enforce the law domestically.
The Posse Comitatus Act was signed into law by President Rutherford B. Hayes amid concerns that the military had too much sway over civilian affairs during Reconstruction. It generally bars the use of the U.S. military for civilian law enforcement inside the country, but there are key exceptions. Trump deployed the National Guard...
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said California will sue the Trump administration on Monday over its deployment of the National Guard to quell Los Angeles protests against federal immigration raids.
In an interview Sunday evening on MSNBC, Newsom said the lawsuit would challenge Trump’s federalizing of the California National Guard without the state’s consent, a move with little precedent in U.S. history.
“Donald Trump has created the conditions you see on your TV tonight. He’s exacerbated the conditions. He’s, you know, lit the proverbial match. He’s putting fuel on this fire, ever since he...
