RFK Jr. Faces Criticism from Former CDC Directors, Calls to Resign

The New York Times Opinion (Left bias) has posted two opinion pieces from nine former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officials and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) that sharply criticized Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. 

Key Details: The former officials are upset that Kennedy has questioned vaccines, fired thousands of bureaucrats, replaced staff on advisory committees, and is looking for alternative treatments. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and some Democratic politicians are also asking Kennedy to resign. Several blue states are also reportedly considering issuing different public health guidance from Kennedy's. Meanwhile, new members of CDC senior leadership will be installed in the coming weeks, CDC acting director Jim O'Neill wrote on X.

Key Quotes: The former CDC directors said that Kennedy has “championed federal legislation that will cause millions of people with health insurance through Medicaid to lose their coverage.” White House spokesperson Kush Desai said, "September is shaping up to be yet another month of MAHA wins — and another month of the same, tired hysteria from Democrats who have yet to show any regret for shoving unscientific mandates and school closures down the throats of everyday Americans during the COVID era."

For Context: On Monday, President Donald Trump asked drug companies to "justify their success" and release COVID vaccine data. In addition, Kennedy is expected to deliver a report on the environmental causes of autism this month. Last week, CDC Director Susan Monarez was fired just weeks after she was sworn in.

How the Media Covered It: Axios (Lean Left) reported that Kennedy's support within the White House and Congress could fray as he "bulldozes evidence-based public health policy." An Breitbart (Right) opinion piece called the former CDC directors "fascists and liars" who forced two-year-olds to wear masks and closed churches and synagogues while allowing Black Lives Matter gatherings. The Sanders opinion piece came two days before the opinion piece by CDC directors under Republican and Democratic administrations.
