Republicans Drop Jordan's Speaker Bid After Three Failed Votes

Summary from the AllSides News Team

After Rep. Jim Jordan’s (R-OH) bid to win the position of House Speaker failed in three votes this week, House Republicans decided Friday to move on and search for a new nominee.

For Context: Two weeks ago, House Democrats joined eight Republicans led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) in voting to oust Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) from the position of House Speaker.

Details: Jordan failed to win over Republican holdouts, with Republican opposition to his bid growing with each vote throughout the week, despite Jordan receiving an endorsement from former president and 2024 GOP frontrunner Donald Trump. The Daily Wire (Right bias) attributed Republican opposition to Jordan to “political gripes or shared concerns about the priorities of their home districts not being met.” The Associated Press (Lean Left bias) reported that “centrist Republicans are revolting over the nominee and the hardball tactics being used to win their votes.” Both outlets cited reported death threats received by Republicans opposing Jordan’s bid as a reason for the growing opposition. On Monday, a Republican candidate forum is scheduled to take place to select a new nominee. The next speaker vote in the House is expected to take place Tuesday.

How the Media Covered It: Jordan’s failure was covered heavily across the spectrum. The Associated Press’ coverage framed Republicans as highly dysfunctional with “no realistic or workable plan to unite the fractured GOP majority” and speculating that “it appears no one at present can win a GOP majority.”
