John Bolton Indicted on 18 Counts Over Classified Documents

Summary from the AllSides News Team

A federal grand jury in Maryland has indicted former national security adviser John Bolton on 18 counts related to mishandling classified information, including eight counts of transmitting national defense information and ten counts of retention.

The Details: Prosecutors allege that between April 2018 and August 2025, Bolton shared more than 1,000 pages of diary-style entries with two individuals “related” to him who did not have security clearances. The materials reportedly contained information classified up to the “Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information” level. Investigators also claim Bolton kept similar documents at his home after leaving his White House position. Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel said in a joint statement that the charges were based on law enforcement considerations, not politics, asserting that “no one is above the law.” President Trump said he was unaware of the ongoing investigation, but called Bolton “a bad guy.”

For Context: Bolton served as national security adviser from April 2018 to September 2019 during Trump’s first term when they had a fall out over foreign policy, according to Axios (Lean Left bias). Bolton is the third critic of Trump to face criminal charges in recent weeks, following former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

How the Media Covered It: Politico (Lean Left) detailed Bolton's history with the Trump administration, noting the charges come amid Trump's push for the Justice Department to indict his political adversaries. It pointed out that Bolton’s indictment resembles investigations of both Trump and former President Joe Biden for possessing classified documents. Politico and Forbes (Center) both emphasized that unlike previous indictments against Trump's foes, the charges against Bolton were backed by career prosecutors, which may lend credibility to the case. Washington Times (Lean Right) wrote, “Trump ‘soured’ on Bolton, saying he was war hungry, and Bolton frequently criticized the president on the airwaves.” It also said Bolton’s 2019 book “raised suspicions,” which led officials to think Bolton retained some classified information.
