Cassidy Hutchinson Book Prompts Discussion of Trump's Role in GOP

Cassidy Hutchinson, a former Trump White House aide who testified to the House Jan. 6 committee, released a new book discussing her experience and the former president’s impact on the GOP. 

For Context: Hutchinson served as an aide to Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows during final years of Trump’s presidency. In 2022 House hearing, Hutchinson made several high-profile claims about former President Donald Trump, including that he said Jan. 6 protesters who might have had weapons were “not here to hurt me.” In her book, titled “Enough,” she claimed Meadows burnt papers so often after the 2020 election that his wife said his suits smelled “like a bonfire.”

Implications for GOP: Aligning herself with Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) and the late President Ronald Reagan, Hutchinson told MSNBC’s (Left bias) Rachel Maddow that the 2024 election cycle was “the make-or-break moment for the Republican Party.”

Sexual Misconduct Allegations: Hutchinson wrote that Rudy Giuliani groped her on the day of the Capitol riot; Giuliani denied the accusation. She also said she never dated Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who had said the two dated “for a few weeks when we were both single years ago.”

How the Media Covered It: Mainstream liberal news outlets and magazines covered the book prominently, sometimes sensationally framing Hutchinson’s claims as “bombshells.” The story also got some attention from the right, although some outlets framed her as unreliable; Fox News (Right bias) did not appear to cover Hutchinson’s remarks at all by Tuesday afternoon.
