Renee Good Shooting: Where Do We Go From Here?

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Questions remain sundry and moral dilemmas persist, after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent Jonathon Ross fatally shot 37-year-old protester Renee Good during an altercation in Minneapolis, Minnesota, last Wednesday.

For Context: A strong point of disagreement comes from the scene's video footage – particularly one angle from a witness compared to another from Ross himself. Some commentators have since compared the shooting and its surrounding controversies to George Floyd's death, which occurred less than a mile away from Good's in 2020. Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison for the "second-degree unintentional murder" of Floyd in 2021. An inmate later stabbed Chauvin 22 times at Tucson Federal Correctional Institution in 2023.

"Jarring Moral Dissonance": "I do not believe that everyone's values should align with mine… But having differing opinions on how to run the economy, for example, is very different than debating whether a protester deserves to die," asserted an opinion writer for HuffPost (Left bias). The writer described a "jarring moral dissonance" among Americans, saying, "Perhaps our black-and-white political echo chambers make it impossible to access empathy when the wrongs being committed are against those we're convinced are our political enemies."

"A Riotous State": "I'm grieved to see the death of a mother, but I am also disappointed that neither Republican nor Democratic leaders βˆ’ from President Donald Trump to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz [D] βˆ’ took a moment before issuing inflammatory, reactive remarks," wrote Nicole Russell (Lean Right) in an opinion for USA Today (Lean Left). She suggested that Minnesota's government "seems like they learned little from the costly aftermath of George Floyd's murder and are eager to whip up Minnesotans into a riotous state of reactive, angry people to defend their progressive ideology." She quoted, for example, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who said footage depicted Ross "recklessly using power." Russell expressed "outrage" for both Good's death and the government's response, and she asserted, "In order to maintain law and order, law enforcement must maintain authority, or we will soon live in a lawless land."

"They Can Learn From It": David Marcus (Right) also juxtaposed Good's case with Floyd's in an opinion for Fox News (Right). He wrote, "While opinions differ on whether [Chauvin] murdered George Floyd in 2020, the actions of Minnesota's political leadership this week put his conviction into question, and clearly show they have no place in any further investigation of the death of Renee Good." He expressed concern for Ross' ability to receive a fair trial, as well as his safety if imprisoned, saying the Trump administration "can learn from" Chauvin's case by "protect[ing] a man who has spent 10 years as an ICE agent protecting you and me."

Opinion

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin is in prison, possibly for the rest of his days, and while opinions differ on whether he murdered George Floyd in 2020, the actions of Minnesota's political leadership this week put his conviction into question, and clearly show they have no place in any further investigation of the death of Renee Good.

No sooner had Wednesday's tragic shooting occurred, than Minneapolis mayor and famed BLM kneeler Jacob Frey came out to say it was murder! Frey didn't wait for evidence, much of which is...

Renee Good didn't have to die, but be honest about ICE shooting
Opinion

My home state of Minnesota, a beautiful place full of hardworking, kind people, continues to be at the center of the national spotlight βˆ’ and not for those good reasons.

This time, it is due to the death of Renee Nicole Good on Jan. 7. She was shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent as she appeared to attempt to drive through a group of ICE agents in her vehicle. Good, a mother of three, was a poet and a new resident of the North Star State.

Opinion

By now, many of us have seen the horrifying footage out of Minneapolis this past week, of an ICE officer fatally shooting Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother who appeared to be turning her car away from him. To me and many others, that video is an unambiguous example of law enforcement using excessive force on an American citizen. After watching it multiple times, I thought that, surely, anyone who also saw it β€” regardless of their political stance β€” would agree that the killing was unwarranted and cruel.
