The Details: The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) suggested the church was hit mistakenly during operational activity, and stated they are investigating the incident. The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem alleges the church was directly hit by a tank shell. Pope Leo XIV called for an immediate ceasefire after the attack.

For Context: The church was sheltering an estimated 600 people, including 54 individuals with special needs. Since October 2023, Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, have been engaged in war in the Gaza Strip. The fighting has led to a severe humanitarian crisis, with over 55,000 Palestinians killed since the start of the war.
