More Americans Support Palestinians Than Israel, Gen Z Overwhelmingly - NYT Poll
Summary from the AllSides News Team
A recent poll from The New York Times (Lean Left bias) and Siena University found American support for Israel has dropped significantly since the beginning of the war in Gaza.
The Details: In December 2023, The Times and Siena found 47% of American voters sided with Israel, while 20% sided with Palestinians. In the new poll, 34% sided with Israel, 35% sided with Palestinians, and 31% said they were unsure or equally supportive of both. The number of Americans who think Israel is “intentionally” killing civilians also changed drastically, rising from 22% to 40%.
Democrats: In 2023, Democrats were divided, with 34% sympathizing with Israel and 31% with Palestinians. The new poll shows 54% of Democrats sympathize more with Palestinians, while only 13% expressed greater sympathy for Israel. 81% of Democrats said Israel should stop the war, even if all hostages haven’t been released, which is up from 59% in 2023. 59% of Democrats believe Israel is intentionally killing civilians, nearly double from 30% in 2023.
Republicans: In 2023, 76% of Republicans were more sympathetic to Israel and 4% to Palestinians. The new poll found 64% sympathized more with Israel, while sympathy for Palestine more than doubled to 9%. Republican views on stopping or continuing the war despite hostages remaining in captivity have changed little since 2023. In 2023, 25% believed it should stop, and 59% believed it should continue, compared to 30% and 54%, respectively, in the new poll. Only 15% of Republicans think Israel is killing civilians intentionally, up from 10% in 2023.
Young People: People aged 18-29, who made up 15% of respondents, overwhelmingly sided against Israel. From this cohort, 61% sympathized more with Palestinians, compared to 19% for Israel, and 69% believed Israel should stop the war, while 19% believed it should continue. 66% believed Israel is intentionally killing civilians. For Context, April 2025 polling from Pew Research Center (Center) found 50% of Republicans and 71% of Democrats aged 18-49 held an “unfavorable” view of Israel.
How The Media Covered It: Outlets across the spectrum noted the shift from young voters, but Newsweek (Center) did so prominently. The Times, in a synopsis of its polling, opened by writing that “large shares of voters” expressed “starkly negative views about the Israeli government’s management of the conflict.” The New York Post (Lean Right) prominently noted it was the first time Americans supported Palestinians over the Israelis since The Times began its polling in 1998.
