Media Report Hamas’ Claim of 31 Civilians Massacred in Gaza, Israel Says 'Allegations' are ‘False’

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Many mainstream media outlets reported 31 people were killed and over 170 wounded in Gaza on Sunday when Israeli forces opened fire towards a crowd of people receiving humanitarian aid, though Israel has described the “allegations” as “false.”

Gaza’s Claim: Many mainstream outlets cited the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and/or other witnesses as sources for the claims of the mass killing.

Aid Foundation’s Rebuttal: The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which is backed by Israel and the United States, said it delivered the aid “without incident” and released a video showing aid distribution that it claims was from the site on Sunday.

Israeli Statements: According to The Times of Israel (Center bias), an Israeli official said troops fired warning shots overnight about a kilometer away from the site before it opened to distribute aid: “IDF troops worked to prevent a number of suspects from approaching the forces. During the activity, warning shots were fired at a number of suspects who approached the forces. There is no connection between the incident in question and the false allegations against the IDF.” The IDF also published a video it said was of masked gunmen shooting Gazans trying to collect aid.

How The Media Covered It: The original claim from Gaza’s Health Ministry was widely reported by mainstream media outlets like Associated Press (Left), CNN (Lean Left), BBC News (Center), Sky News (Lean Left), and more. Several outlets have since updated headlines and coverage to reflect Israel’s denial of the claims. Al Jazeera (Lean Left) gave less air to denials in its coverage and noted just once that the GHF, which it described as “controversial,” denied the claims. Other outlets highlighted denials more prominently in updated coverage.

U.S.-backed aid group denies that 31 Palestinians were killed on their way to get food in Rafah
News

Officials with the Hamas-run Health Ministry in the Gaza Strip said that 31 Palestinians were shot dead Sunday on their way to get food from an aid distribution site. But the U.S.-backed charity helping to deliver that aid vehemently denied those claims.

The conflicting accounts about what actually took place in the city of Rafah underscore the difficulty in getting accurate information out of the Gaza Strip, which has been the site of an intense Israeli military operation since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack on the Jewish state. Hamas...

At least 31 Palestinians were killed and dozens were wounded early Sunday by Israeli fire as they were on their way to a humanitarian aid distribution site in the southern Gaza Strip, multiple witnesses and Hamas authorities said. The Israel Defense Forces late Sunday said it didn’t shoot Gazans at or near the distribution site, and denounced false allegations against it.

The IDF initially issued a vague statement, saying that “at this time, we are unaware of injuries caused by IDF troops’ fire within the [humanitarian aid] distribution site” in...

31 Palestinians are killed heading to a Gaza aid site, witnesses say. Israel denies responsibility

At least 31 people were killed and over 170 were wounded Sunday as large crowds were on their way to receive food in the Gaza Strip, health officials and witnesses said. Witnesses said Israeli forces fired toward the crowds just before dawn around a kilometer (about 1,100 yards) from an aid site run by an Israeli-backed foundation.

Israel’s military denied its forces fired at civilians near or within the site in the southern city of Rafah. An Israeli military official, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with procedure, said troops...
