At least 11 Palestinians were killed and over 100 were wounded in a gun battle during an Israeli raid in the West Bank.

The Details: Israeli troops conducted a rare daytime arrest raid in the city of Nablus Wednesday morning, sparking a clash with Palestinian gunmen that AP (Lean Left bias) called “one of the bloodiest battles in nearly a year of fighting.” While some of the dead were militants, some were civilians, with ages ranging from 16 to 72. 

For Context: Tensions between Israelis and Palestinians have been high in 2023; in late January, several members of both groups were killed in successive attacks shortly before a visit from U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Some in Israel’s right-wing governing coalition, formed in December under the leadership of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have voiced support for legitimizing Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank, further encroaching on land which Palestinians see as theirs. On Monday, the U.N. Security Council adopted a statement expressing “concern” and “dismay” over settlement expansion plans, and Netanyahu’s office told the Biden administration it would not approve any more settlements than it already had.
