Israel Kills Nine Children of Gaza Doctor in Airstrike While She’s At Work

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Israel struck the home of a Palestinian doctor in Gaza on Friday, killing nine of her ten children and leaving her surviving son and husband badly injured, according to the hospital where she works.

The Details: Dr. Alaa al-Najjar, a pediatrician at the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, was at work when the strike occurred. The Hamas-run health ministry shared a video verified by BBC (Center bias) that showed “small burned bodies lifted from the rubble of a strike.” BBC also reported speaking to some of al-Najjar’s colleagues, doctors from Bulgaria and Britain, who confirmed the strike and injuries.

Israeli Statement: Israel said, “Aircraft struck a number of suspects who were identified operating from a structure adjacent to IDF troops in the area of Khan Younis. The Khan Younis area is a dangerous war zone. Before beginning operations there, the IDF evacuated civilians from this area for their own safety.”

For Context: On Saturday, Israel said it had struck more than 100 targets across Gaza during the previous day. The Hamas ministry said at least 74 people were killed during this period.

How the Media Covered It: AllSides did not find much coverage from the right. BBC News reported statements from al-Najjar’s colleagues and prominently included Israel’s statements as well. The Guardian (Left) emphasized the personal tragedy of the doctor and noted Hamas’ claim that 54,000 Palestinians have been killed since the beginning of the war. The Daily Mail (Right) focused on the critical condition of the surviving husband and child.

And like every day, with war raging in Gaza and Israeli strikes landing just metres from her neighbourhood in Khan Younis, Najjar worried about leaving them at home without her.

But Najjar, 35, had little choice. One of Gaza’s dwindling number of medics, a respected paediatrician at the Nasser medical complex, she had to go to work...
