Iran Launches Wide-Scale Missile Attack on Israel

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Iran launched strikes against Israel early Sunday morning, most of which were intercepted by Israel and its allies.

The Details: In total, 185 drones, 110 surface-to-surface missiles, and 36 cruise missiles were launched, according to The New York Times (Lean Left bias), most of which were shot down by Israel with the help of the United States, United Kingdom, and Jordan. A few of the ballistic missiles landed inside Israel, but only light damage was done to the Nevatim Air Force base.

Casualty Report: Reportedly, no casualties occurred, but NBC News (Lean Left bias) reported severe injuries to a 10-year-old girl, and Newsmax (Lean Right bias) reported a 7-year-old girl in serious condition as a result of the strike.

For Context:  The attack marks the first time Iran directly attacked Israel and is presumably retaliation for an April 1 strike on the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria, which killed a top Iranian general and six other officers. Israel did not claim responsibility for the attack, nor did the U.S. reveal who was behind it, but Iran blamed Israel.

Response: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed victory: “We intercepted, we repelled, together we shall win.” He also said, “Whoever harms us, we will harm them.” Iran’s Major General Mohammad Bagheri warned Israel and U.S. forces in the region, “Our response will be much larger than tonight's military action if Israel retaliates against Iran.” President Biden announced the U.S. will convene the G-7 to “coordinate a united diplomatic response to Iran’s brazen attack.”

Iran launched a retaliatory attack against Israel on Saturday that risks sparking a regional conflict involving U.S. military forces. The operation, which Israeli officials said included more than 300 missiles and drones, marked the first time that Iran has launched a direct military attack on the Jewish state.

Of some 30 cruise missiles launched toward Israel, 25 were intercepted by Israeli fighter jets and none managed to enter the country, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, an Israel Defense Forces spokesperson, said early Sunday. A "few" of the nearly 120 ballistic missiles fired toward Israel...

Iran launched a drone swarm toward Israel on Saturday night into Sunday morning local time, following through on its threats of retaliation against the Jewish state after several top Iranian commanders were killed in a suspected Israeli strike in Syria earlier this month.

The United States has acted to defend Israel from the onslaught, which marks the first direct attack on Israel by Iran; until now, Iran has relied on proxies such as Hamas and Hezbollah. American forces have intercepted and shot down several drones before they reached Israeli airspace,...
