Pentagon Introduces New Press Corps Following Major Media Walkout

Summary from the AllSides News Team

The Defense Department announced Wednesday the creation of what it describes as the “next generation” of the Pentagon press corps, following the departure of dozens of reporters from major media organizations who refused to sign a new press access policy.

The Details: According to chief spokesperson Sean Parnell, more than 60 journalists have signed the policy and will join 26 others from 18 outlets that previously agreed to the new terms. The Pentagon declined to release a full list of the new outlets, but social media posts indicate many of the credentialed organizations include conservative or right-leaning outlets such as The Post Millennial (Right bias), The Gateway Pundit (Right), National Pulse (Right)Turning Point USA’s Frontlines (Right)Just the News (Lean Right), and political commentator Tim Pool (Lean Right). In a post on X, Parnell said the group represents “a broad spectrum of new media outlets and independent journalists” and criticized departing reporters as “self-righteous media who chose to self-deport from the Pentagon.” He added that the journalists are getting “real news directly to the American people.”

For Context: The announcement follows a mass exit of reporters from major news organizations, including New York Times (Lean Left)The Washington Post (Lean Left)Fox News (Right), and CNN (Lean Left), who declined to sign a new policy, citing concerns it would curb press freedom. Since taking office, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has defended the changes as necessary to protect sensitive information and maintain operational security, while asserting that the department remains committed to transparency.

How the Media Covered It: Just the News reported the news positively, and emphasized the importance of covering military affairs and their eagerness to adhere to the new guidelines. The Hill (Center) highlighted the mass exit of several major left and right-rated news outlets, and wrote the new outlets “agreed to adhere to unprecedented protocols” set by the Pentagon to not share unapproved information. It also mentioned Hegseth’s breach of national security information in a Signal chat earlier this year, which “contradict[ed]” the new policy. Politico (Lean Left) contrasted the Pentagon's assertion that "journalists remain free to gather information through legitimate means" with objections raised by the Pentagon Press Association, which described the new policy as cutting off the American public from information not controlled and pre-approved by the Pentagon.
