Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Saturday said that he believes the Supreme Court was "clearly wrong" when it ruled in 2015 that same-sex marriage was legal under the Constitution.
The Supreme Court decision, Obergefell v. Hodges, made it illegal for states to deny a marriage certificate to same-sex couples. "Obergefell, like Roe v. Wade, ignored two centuries of our nation's history. Marriage was always an issue that was left to the states," Cruz said on an episode of his podcast "The Cloakroom" with conservative political commentator Liz Wheeler. While Cruz didn't explicitly say that he wants to prohibit same-sex couples from getting married, he advocated for a system where states are given more power to rule on certain constitutional rights such as same-sex marriage.
Left-rated outlets were more likely to label Cruz as a "longtime opponent of same-sex marriage" and maintain that marriage equality is in "imminent danger" in the wake of Roe's demise. Some right-rated outlets noted that it's a "commonly held belief" among conservatives that Obergefell v. Hodges was wrongly decided and criticized media outlets that "twisted his words to tell a more sinister story."
