Annual Arrests at Southern Border Top 2 Million for First Time
Summary from the AllSides News Team
U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested over 2.1 million unauthorized migrants at the southern border this fiscal year, a new record.
203,597 migrant encounters were recorded at the U.S.–Mexico border in August, bringing the fiscal year total above 2 million for the first time ever. Border Patrol agents conducted 20,464 life-saving operations involving migrants between Oct. 2021 and Sept. 2022, up from 12,833 in the previous fiscal year. Border authorities encountered 15,558 non-citizens with criminal records at the border in the past year, more than the previous two years combined.
The data was published as Republican governors and Democratic leaders spar over what to do with migrants. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott stirred controversy last week by sending dozens of migrants north; DeSantis flew 48 Venezuelan migrants to the Massachusetts island of Martha's Vineyard, and Abbott sent two buses full of migrants to Vice President Kamala Harris's residence in Washington D.C.
The news was covered by sources across the political spectrum. Center- and right-rated sources were more likely to highlight the new record, and how unauthorized migration levels are much higher under Biden than under former President Donald Trump. Left-rated sources tended to focus more on the root causes of migration and where the migrants were coming from.
