Trump Administration Begins Clearing Homeless Encampments in DC

Summary from the AllSides News Team

The Trump Administration has begun to remove homeless encampments in Washington D.C., after announcing a federal takeover of the city on Monday.

The Details: Sweeps began Wednesday and are expected to continue through the weekend. Sites near a highway by the Lincoln Memorial and Kennedy Center have been cleared, with tents near Washington Circle Park expected to close Monday. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters, “Homeless individuals will be given the option to leave their encampment, to be taken to a homeless shelter, to be offered addiction or mental health services.” Refusals will be susceptible to fines or to jail time.

Homelessness in DC: According to USAFacts, there are around 80 people per 10,000 residents considered homeless in the greater D.C. area–the second highest after Hawaii. In 2024, the District’s Department of Human Services (DHS) found homelessness was up 14% between 2023 and 2024, but down 30% from 2020. Since Trump signed the “Making the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful” executive order in March, the US Park Police have removed 70 encampments in the DC area.

How the Media Covered It: National Review (Lean Right bias) emphasized homelessness rates in DC, and the White House’s goal to improve safety in America’s capital. It cited D.C. Code 22-1307 and D.C. municipal regulation 24-100, which allow law enforcement to clear encampments and “fix the homelessness problem” in the city. Several outlets on the left covered the impact on homeless individuals, describing the situation as “confusing” and anxiety-inducing. Washington Post (Lean Left) cited concerns from homeless advocacy groups who argued that increased policing was “not a long-term solution.” CNN (Lean Left) highlighted the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on homelessness, and its disproportionate impacts on marginalized communities.
