Trump Admin to Withhold $259M in Medicaid Funding to MN

Vice President JD Vance announced the federal government would withhold $259.5 million in Medicaid funding for Minnesota over recent fraud.

The Details: Vance and Dr. Mehmet Oz, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) administrator, announced the Trump administration was halting the funds to ensure the state of Minnesota would be "good stewards of the American people's tax money." Oz said the funds would be restored after Minnesota "propose[s] and act[s] on a comprehensive corrective plan" within 60 days to solve fraud in the state. Oz also announced CMS would block any new Medicare enrollments for six months from certain suppliers of medical equipment.

For Context: Fortune (Center bias) reported Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said that his team has secured over 300 Medicaid fraud convictions since he took office in 2019. It also said between 2018 and 2024, the Office of the Inspector General for the US Department of Health and Human Services found Medicare improperly paid suppliers nearly $23 million for durable medical equipment. In December, three separate investigations found an estimated $1 billion in public funds have been stolen from Minnesota's safety net programs over the past five years.
