How Student Journalists are Covering the Country's Biggest Issues

Summary from the AllSides News Team

At the end of January, AllSides announced the winners of its first student journalism contest. Here is what the students chose to cover.

From the Left: Samara Castro, Grade 12 from California, wrote a media bias alert on whether unauthorized immigrants were hurting the American economy. She examined articles from Fox News (Right bias) and the Guardian (Left) saying, "Fox News utilizes multiple spin words and phrases... However, The Guardian is heavily mind reading and making unsubstantiated claims."

From the Center: Representing the Center, Carson Ramon Fusco, Grade 11 from New Jersey, wrote about how social media algorithms shape teenagers political beliefs. "In short: algorithms amplify tone, not ideology. They can make politics feel more heated, more absolute, and more personal without necessarily changing a teen's core beliefs," he wrote in his under-the-radar story.

From the Right: Mackenzie Wilkins, Grade 10 from New Hampshire, wrote about North Dakota's abortion ban. "Left-leaning media focuses on the health of women and the importance of bodily autonomy, supporting abortion as a right and healthcare. Right-leaning media focuses on human life, morality, and protecting unborn children. These varying sources and biases reporting on the North Dakota abortion ban clearly shows how different media sources can differ and change individuals' understandings. An array of these sources is vital for citizens to be able to form their own opinions and truly know what is happening in their country," she wrote.

North Dakota's abortion ban offers a clear example of how the media across all political views view and present the topic of abortion. Abortion is a common and controversial topic within the media. It is a medical procedure which intentionally terminates a human pregnancy. It is one of the topics with the clearest biases shown. These biases range from, "abortion is a fundamental human right," to "abortion...

As Teens Scroll, a Different Political Story Emerges
For years, public debate around social media has focused on one idea: that TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube feed teenagers political content that pushes them toward extremism. The theory is simple — and popular among both politicians and parents — but current research paints a more complicated picture. Algorithms do shape what teens see, but the effect is not the...

If you have been following any sort of news lately, you most likely have heard about Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) beginning their mission of "detecting and dismantling transnational criminal networks that target the American people and threaten our industries, organizations and financial systems" (U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement). However, there is a large disagreement on both sides as to whether unauthorized immigrants are actually a threat. Today, we...
