US Sanctions Russian Officials Over Navalny Poisoning, Jailing

U.S. officials announced Tuesday that the Treasury, State and Commerce departments would impose sanctions on seven Russian officials over the poisoning and jailing of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The U.S. also sanctioned 14 entities involved in producing biological and chemical agents for Russia. Furthermore, officials said they would impose more sanctions in the coming weeks over other Russian actions. The same day, the European Union announced sanctions against four Russian officials over Navalny’s jailing; the E.U. previously sanctioned six Russian officials and one entity in October 2020 over Navalny’s poisoning. Coverage followed similar narratives across the spectrum. Coverage in left-rated outlets was slightly more likely to include "Biden administration" in headlines. Some coverage from both sides portrayed the sanctions as relatively lenient and compared them to the Biden administration’s position on Saudi Arabia.
