Fact Checking the Vance-Walz Vice Presidential Debate

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) and Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz each made many claims in the vice presidential debate hosted by CBS News (Lean Left bias), drawing fact checks.

From the Left: CNN Fact Check (Left bias) fact checked 15 claims from Vance and two from Walz. It prominently described Vance’s characterization of Vice President Kamala Harris as President Biden’s “border czar” as “false.”

From the Center: Reuters (Center bias) examined 12 claims: six from Walz and six from Vance. Several of Walz’s statements Reuters examined were about his track record governing Minnesota, while most of Vance’s claims examined were regarding geopolitical issues.

From the Right: The Daily Signal (Right bias) fact checked seven claims from Walz, three from Vance, and one from each CBS moderator. Of Walz’s claim that the national abortion ban resulted in the death of Amber Thurman, The Daily Signal pointed to the recent ProPublica (Left bias) report on the matter, which AllSides recently examined in-depth.

Overlapping Examinations: CNN and Reuters examined Vance’s claim that Iran “received over $100 billion in unfrozen assets thanks to the Kamala Harris administration.” Reuters labeled the claim “mixed,” while CNN labeled it “false.” Reuters and The Daily Signal examined Vance’s claim that no “major conflicts” began during former President Trump’s presidency. The Daily Signal described it as “largely true,” while Reuters said it “needs more context.” CNN and The Daily Signal examined Walz’s claim that Project 2025 calls for a national pregnancy registry. Both agreed that it was “false.”

With only 34 days until the 2024 presidential election, vice presidential candidates Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the Democrat, and Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, the Republican, squared off Tuesday night on the debate stage.

CBS News hosted the vice presidential debate in New York City, with “CBS Evening News” anchor Norah O’Donnell and “Face the Nation” chief foreign affairs correspondent Margaret Brennan moderating.

Walz, Kamala Harris’ running mate, and Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate, are both relatively new to the political limelight.
