Fact-Checking Night 1 of the Democratic National Convention
Summary from the AllSides News Team
The Democratic National Convention commenced on Monday with a list of over two dozen speakers, closing with a speech from President Joe Biden. Here's what fact-checkers said.
From the Right: Breitbart (Right bias) focused on fact-checking claims about the economy, jobs, voter ID, and Donald Trump's claims about COVID-19. The outlet argued that Kamala Harris was not from the middle class and that Trump had fought for autoworkers, which it juxtaposed with a quote from a DNC speaker who it said accused Trump of having “lied [to] and abandoned” autoworkers. Breitbart also drew a distinction between voter ID laws and voter suppression; it's unclear whether Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA), who said, “the lie and the logic of January 6" had " metastasized into dozens of voter suppression laws all across our country” was referring to voter ID laws or other laws regarding practices like mail-in voting.
From the Left: The New York Times (Lean Left bias), CNN (Lean Left bias), and Politifact (Lean Left bias) also focused on claims about the economy and COVID-19 treatment, as well as abortion, Trump's "suckers and losers" comment, and Vance's comments about women. Many of the claims made by the DNC speakers regarding Trump and Vance's past comments didn't mention the denials, retractions, and clarifications the candidates had made. Fact-checks about the economy and jobs sometimes lacked the context that certain spikes were, in part, due to the economy bouncing back from the pandemic.

Mr. Biden’s speech capped a night in which Democratic lawmakers and party stalwarts praised Vice President Kamala Harris, warned repeatedly that former President Donald J. Trump was unfit for office and celebrated Mr. Biden’s legacy.
In a torch-passing speech, President Joe Biden vowed that he would be “the best volunteer” to help the campaign of his vice president, Kamala Harris. Biden also touted his accomplishments and took shots at the Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump. Several claims by Biden, and some from other Democrats at the Chicago convention, missed the mark.
Biden misleadingly cited “historic joblessness” in talking about his Inauguration Day in 2021. The economy was still struggling then, but many of the jobs lost in the early months of the pandemic had been...

Breitbart Fact Check
CLAIM: Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) claimed during the first night of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) that Republican presidential nominee former President Donald Trump told Americans “to inject bleach” into their bodies. VERDICT: False. As Breitbart News has previously reported, the White House transcript shows that Trump was talking about the future use of experimental ultraviolet (UV) light technology and how it could be used as a disinfectant. Trump questioned if it would be possible to “inject” it into the human body but never suggested anyone should inject bleach. During...
