Green New Deal Dies in Senate

Summary from the AllSides News Team

The final vote was 57 against (including all Republicans and a handful of Democrats), and the remaining (43 Democrats) voting "present" in protest. No one voted in favor of the plan. At least 60 votes were needed to keep the bill crafted by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) moving, meaning the legislation is dead. Republicans have criticized the plan as an unrealistic, radical socialist fantasy to remake the entire American economy, while some Congressional Democrats said the effort by Republicans to bring the plan to the floor was a political ploy or "sham" to divide Democrats.

The final vote was 57 against and no one for the plan, with 43 Democrats voting present.

Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Angus King of Maine, Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona and Doug Jones of Alabama voted no with the Republicans.

Ahead of the vote, Senate Democrats blasted the vote as a “sham.” Democratic...
