Trump-Backed Candidate Wins Maryland GOP Gubernatorial Primary
Summary from the AllSides News Team
Another of former President Donald Trump's 2022 midterm elections endorsements won their primary race Tuesday.
Dan Cox, a conservative state legislator who supports Trump's claim that the 2020 election was stolen from him, won Maryland's Republican gubernatorial nomination over former state Commerce Secretary Kelly Schulz, according to multiple news outlets. Cox will face a touch Democratic matchup to replace moderate GOP Gov. Larry Hogan in a blue state.
Joining Trump in support of Cox's campaign was the Democratic Governors Association, which spent over $1 million on TV ads highlighting Trump's endorsement of Cox and his most conservative positions. Democrats have meddled in 2022 races with the hopes of elevating Trump-backed candidates who they believe are sure to lose in November's general elections.
Maryland's 2022 primary results were covered prominently across the political spectrum. Differences in reports about Cox's win reflected the divides over the 2020 presidential election results. CNN described Cox as "an election denier who has taken a series of hard-line conservative positions." Fox News described him as a "a strong supporter of Trump’s constant re-litigation of the 2020 election."
