Graham Platner Ends Senate Candidacy Amid Assault Allegation, Dems Search for Replacement

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Senate candidate Graham Platner dropped out of the race on Wednesday following accusations of sexual assault.

The Details: Jenny Raciot accused Platner of sexual assault on Monday, saying he entered her Maine home uninvited in late 2021, reportedly intoxicated, and assaulted her. In an X post, Platner said, "We believe that for the [Democratic] movement to continue, it can't be me. For that reason, we are suspending campaign operations." Platner has denied the allegations but said he'll file former paperwork to withdraw from the Maine Senate race. Maine Democrats have until July 27 to select a new candidate.

What's Next for Democrats?: The Washington Times (Lean Right bias) said Platner's exit was "overdue in the eyes of most Democrats" as the party had become "openly frustrated with him dragging out his exit." The Guardian (Left) emphasized that Democrats needed to win the House of Representatives and the Senate to limit President Trump's power in his final two years of office. It wrote that with Platner's latest controversy, the party is in "grave danger of blowing" their chance to do that. The outlet also criticized Platner's list of controversies and the pattern of Democrats overlooking them, but noted there's "still hope" that Democrats find a replacement. Daily Signal (Right) said Platner's exit has "plunged one of the most competitive races in the 2026 midterm elections into turmoil."Β

Who Will Replace Platner?: Axios (Lean Left) and New York Times (Lean Left) both outlined different people who could potentially take Platner's place in the midterms. The Times wrote that choosing a new candidate "will be politically thorny" as progressives and moderates battle it out. Among some of the candidates named were Former Maine CDC Director Nirav Shah, Former Senate candidate Jordan Wood, Maine's secretary of state Shenna Bellows and Gov. Janet Mills. Daily Signal reported that actor Patrick Dempsey, known for his role in "Grey's Anatomy", said he's considered running but decided against it.
