French President Emmanuel Macron Wins Re-Election

French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday was re-elected for a second term, beating out national populist candidate Marine Le Pen.

Macron, who received an estimated 58% of the votes, became the first French president to secure a second term in office since 2002. Vowing to be a "president for everyone," Macron said he would try to unify a divided France during his victory speech in front of the Eiffel Tower. Le Pen, whose popularity has steadily increased over the years, conceded defeat but called the election results "a shining victory in itself."

Time Magazine and other left-rated outlets were more likely to emphasize how Macron survived a "far-right challenge" from Le Pen that "risked shattering the Western alliance against Russia" and "jeopardizing the very survival of the European Union." Breitbart and other right-rated outlets were more likely to accentuate Macron's "big drop in support" and how the mainstream media has "widely vilified" Le Pen as a "far-right" stooge of Russia’s president Vladimir Putin. The Wall Street Journal (Center bias) described France as a "deeply divided" nation and highlighted voices who said Macron needs to "lead a policy of social reconciliation."
