UPenn Agrees to Ban Transgender Athletes Following Title IX Violations

The University of Pennsylvania has reached an agreement with the Trump administration to strip transgender swimmer Lia Thomas of her titles, and to ban transgender athletes from women's sports, after findings that the university violated Title IX provisions.

The Details: UPenn has agreed to apologize for Title IX violations, and will also restore titles, records, or recognitions "misappropriated by male athletes allowed to compete in female categories". UPenn is also required to issue a public statement committing to biology-based definitions of sex under Title IX, ban male athletes from women’s sports and facilities, and send apology letters to affected female swimmers.

For Context: Thomas competed in the 2021–2022 swim season and became the first openly transgender athlete to win an NCAA Division I title, taking first place in the 500-yard freestyle. In February, Trump signed an executive order banning trans athletes from participating in women’s sports at public schools, and threatened to remove federal funding from schools that didn’t comply.
