Mexico Sends 26 Cartel Members to US For Prosecution

Mexico sent 26 high-ranking cartel members to the United States on Tuesday for prosecution at the request of the US Justice Department.

The Details: Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office and Security ministry confirmed the transfer under orders that the Justice Department would not seek the death penalty. US officials said the individuals extradited face charges in federal courts, including drug trafficking, murder, and organized crime. According to the US Embassy in Mexico, members of the Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) and Sinaloa Cartel–two of Mexico’s most prominent organized crime organizations–were among those being transferred to US prisons.

For Context: Mexico previously transferred 29 other organized crime figures to the US in February before a 25% tariff on Mexican imports was to take effect. Last week, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum rejected a directive from President Trump that allowed US military action against certain drug cartels.
