A married couple was convicted of orchestrating a nationwide scheme to steal millions of dollars in federal program funds intended to benefit elderly, disabled and homeless Americans, the Department of Justice announced.

The funding was administered through programs managed by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, federal officials said.

"These convictions send a clear message that those who exploit federal programs for personal gain will be held fully accountable," said Assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald of the Justice Department's National Fraud Enforcement Division...
