Businessman Testifies to Bribing Sen. Menendez to Intervene in Criminal Probe

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Last week, a New Jersey businessman testified that he bribed Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) in 2019.

For Context: Menendez and his wife, Nadine Menendez, are charged with 18 criminal counts in the wide-reaching bribery case. Prosecutors allege Menendez accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in exchange for favorable actions toward the governments of Egypt and Qatar. Both Menendez and his wife pleaded not guilty to the charges. Nadine Menendez’s trial is delayed until July while she undergoes treatment for breast cancer.

Details: Last week, a New Jersey businessman named Jose Uribe testified that he bribed Menendez in 2019 by giving Mendenz’s wife a Mercedes-Benz in exchange for Menendez stopping a criminal probe involving Uribe and an associate of his. Uribe pled guilty to a handful of charges in March and agreed to cooperate with the investigation into Menendez. During his plea, Uribe stated, “I knew that giving a car in return for influencing a United States senator to stop a criminal investigation was wrong.” The former New Jersey attorney general Gurbir Grewal also testified last week, stating that Mendendez contacted him about the case involving Uribe. Additionally, an FBI investigator testified that while listening in on a dinner conversation between the Menendez couple and a group including an Egyptian government official, she heard Nadine Menendez state, “What else can the love of my life do for you?”

How the Media Covered It: Outlets across the spectrum are covering the trial mildly, with right-rated outlets featuring coverage slightly more prominently.

The man and the woman arrived at the Washington steakhouse one evening in May 2019 and took a table on the patio, near where five diners already were seated and seemed to be enjoying themselves. Jackets were off, laughter was heard and wine was being poured. A cigarette dangled from one man’s hand.

But there was something else that stood out: Among the five were Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey and his future wife, Nadine Menendez.

The couple who had arrived late appeared to be on a date. She...

The former New Jersey attorney general Gurbir Grewal testified at U.S. Senator Bob Menendez's corruption trial on Thursday that the lawmaker sought to intervene in a local criminal case, including a meeting that Grewal's deputy described as "gross."

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan have said Menendez sought to have Grewal, the state's top prosecutor from 2018 through 2021, intervene in cases involving two associates of insurance and trucking businessman Jose Uribe.

In exchange, Uribe allegedly helped Menendez and his wife Nadine Menendez buy a $60,000 Mercedes-Benz convertible with money disguised as...

A New Jersey businessman testified Friday that he bribed Sen. Bob Menendez, telling jurors in the Garden State Democrat’s federal corruption trial that he provided the lawmaker’s wife with a Mercedes-Benz to shut down a criminal probe.

“She agreed to the terms,” Jose Uribe told the Federal District Court in Manhattan of Nadine Menendez’s reaction to his March 2019 offer to buy her a $60,000 luxury convertible if she could get her 70-year-old senator husband to scuttle an investigation into two of his associates by the state attorney general’s office.
