$473 Million in Drugs Seized in Largest-Ever Coast Guard Seizure

Summary from the AllSides News Team

The US Coast Guard announced it seized 76,140 pounds of illegal drugs off the Florida coast on Monday–the largest amount of illegal drugs seized by the Coast Guard in its 110 year history.

The Details: The drugs–valued at $473 million–were seized from 19 interceptions in the eastern Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea between June 26 and Aug. 18, according to a press release from the Coast Guard. It said that during the interceptions, the Cutter Hamilton crew intercepted 11 go-fast vessels, and detained 34 suspected drug traffickers. The release also said the crew offloaded 14,400 pounds of marijuana and 61,740 pounds of cocaine, which officials said equates to an estimated 23 million potential lethal doses. According to the Department of Homeland Security, the capture is the first major offload of Operation Pacific Viper.

For Context: Operation Pacific Viper is a partnership between the Coast Guard, the U.S. Navy, the Royal Netherlands Navy, and Customs and Border Protection to disrupt drug and human smuggling from South America before it reaches the US. The Coast Guard says about 80% of drug interdictions occur at sea.

How the Media Covered It: Fox News (Right bias) noted Operation Pacific Viper as part of President Trump’s broader effort to tackle drug trafficking. It highlighted some of the interdictions, including one off the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador, and one near Socorro Island, Mexico. CNN (Lean Left) did not mention Operation Pacific Viper, but noted that Trump has prioritized the fight against fentanyl, and signed legislation to strengthen prison sentences for fentanyl trackers. It also mentioned Trump has cited fentanyl trafficking as a reason for his tariff threats against Canada, Mexico, and China. Straight Arrow News (Center) also included some interdictions from the operation, and linked to Coast Guard videos from its operation near Haiti on August 15.
