Examining Reactions to Biden Saying COVID-19 Pandemic 'is Over'

Summary from the AllSides News Team

In an interview with CBS News's (Lean Left bias) 60 Minutes aired on Sunday, President Joe Biden declared that the "pandemic is over." How did America react?

Those who still see COVID-19 as a significant public health emergency tended to criticize the remark, and highlighted data about how case and death counts remain high relative to the spring. The Washington Post's editorial board argued that the pandemic "is still raging — in the sense that a dangerous virus is infecting, sickening and killing people, mutating to survive and haunting the globe."

One article from STAT News cited numerous health experts who agreed that "the pandemic is over when people stop taking measures to protect themselves" and "resume pre-pandemic behavior." The Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) COVID-19 public health emergency declaration expires Oct. 13, but may be renewed.

Those who believe the pandemic is over responded by calling on Biden's administration to end all COVID-related restrictions and vaccine mandates. Right-rated news sources tended to highlight these voices as well as other critics. Some voices in right-rated outlets, including National Review (Right bias)also cited the comment as evidence that Biden's move to forgive billions of dollars in student loan debt is illegal, since the memo seeking to justify the program cites "financial hardship arising out of the COVID-19 pandemic" as a primary justification.

President Biden told Scott Pelley of “60 Minutes” it was. The Sunday night interview aired just days after the director-general of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said the end may be in sight — though Tedros clearly didn’t mean it was days away when he predicted it.

But how confident can we be that the pandemic is or will soon be over? How can we know we’ve reached “over” when the disease we’ve been fighting isn’t going away?

Reaching the end of a pandemic is...

Opinion

“The pandemic is over” is surely what everyone wanted to hear. President Biden made the declaration in a Sunday “60 Minutes” broadcast. But before rushing out to the ticker-tape parade, sit down. The pandemic is still raging — in the sense that a dangerous virus is infecting, sickening and killing people, mutating to survive and haunting the globe. The pandemic has shifted — and normalcy has returned in many ways — but it is not over.

Why Mr. Biden said otherwise is obvious. The midterm elections are coming, and Americans feel an...

President Joe Biden's "60 Minutes" declaration "the pandemic is over" is drawing a response Monday, but not quite a joyous one.

"The pandemic is over," Biden said Sunday. "We still have a problem with COVID. We're still doing a lot of work on it, but the pandemic is over."

Health experts are saying the pandemic is not actually over yet, while Republicans are saying Biden and Democrats need to move to unwind their strict COVID-19 public policies and protocols then, if it indeed was over.

"With the pandemic officially over,...
