Afghanistan Government Collapses As Taliban Fighters Conquer Kabul
AllSides Summary
The Taliban has regained control of Afghanistan's government after being removed from power by the United States two decades ago. The militant organization seized the nation's capital, Kabul, on Sunday while facing little resistance from government forces. After pledging to “prevent further instability” during a national address on Saturday, President Ashraf Ghani fled the country shortly after the Taliban fighters entered the capital. Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai said that a council would be formed to "prevent chaos" and better manage the transition; two Taliban officials told Reuters on Sunday morning there would be no transitional government in Afghanistan and that the group expects a complete handover of power. Another spokesman told Al-Jazeera Mubasher TV that the war is over in Afghanistan and that the type of regime to be established will be revealed soon.
Coverage of Kabul's fall and Ghani's exit was prominently featured by most major news outlets across the spectrum. Right-rated outlets were more likely to highlight Trump's criticism of Biden's Afghanistan withdrawal strategy as well as Biden's "vacation" at Camp David.
