A man identified as Carlos was released early Wednesday after being detained for questioning in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84‑year‑old mother of Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie, The New York Times reported. He was detained during a traffic stop by investigators looking into Guthrie's case. Outside a residence in Rio Rico, a woman described the man as her son‑in‑law and said investigators forced entry before searching the property. She explained that he had been out delivering food when the police stopped him. She insisted that the masked figure seen in newly released FBI surveillance footage was not him.
The video shows a person on Nancy Guthrie's porch around the time she is believed to have disappeared from her Tucson neighborhood on February 1. The individual is wearing a ski mask, gloves, and a backpack and appears to be carrying a handgun.
