Proposition 50 was passing with about 65% of the vote in early returns, too wide a margin for opponents to overcome in the remaining uncounted ballots.
The win in California's special statewide election was one of many decisive victories for Democrats on Tuesday night, which cumulatively represented a stunning rebuke of Trump and the Republican Party, which controls the White House, Senate and House. Those wins included the governorships of New Jersey and Virginia, and Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani’s historic election as mayor of New York City. Tuesday's wins will give the Democratic Party fuel as it seeks to retake the House in 2026 to provide a check on Trump's power.
