Australia has become the first country to implement a nationwide ban on social media for children under the age of 16. The new law requires social media companies, including TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, and X, to take "reasonable steps" to prevent anyone under 16 from creating an account. Companies failing to comply could face fines of up to $33 million.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the responsibility now lies with social media platforms to enforce the age restrictions. However, underage users and their parents will not face penalties for violations.
